In Memory of Elizabeth Reed, Dicky Betts
When I lived in NYC, I worked at the Lone Star Cafe for awhile. It was a very famous place and had incredible concerts a few days a week. It was 2 stories and like an old saloon. From the upper level you can look down onto the stage. Wikipedia tells me that it opened in 1976 and was the premier country music venue in the city. It had a massive Iguana on top.
I worked lunch, only, and it was pretty dead...but sometimes, after lunch while cleaning up after the shift, you could watch performers practicing or warming up.
The only and best memory I have of Lone Star was when I was practically the only person there except for the bartender and Dicky Betts of The Allman Brothers Band was warming up. I have always been a huge fan of the Allman Bros. and had seen them many times live and had many of there albums.
I didn't know Dicky Betts from any other dude...I knew Greg Allman as he was the standout, visually, but this guy gets up on stage, alone and with an electric guitar plays the entire "in Memory of Elizabeth Reed"...one of my favorite songs...an instrumental with amazing guitar . I recognized it right away and I know it was his song...so here I was witnessing this amazing performance...I will never forget it.
Check it out.
